Brief Notes of kapu

Origins:
Since it is a large, diverse and geographically well spread with multiple divisions there is not one root or Origin but the most prevalent theories of their origin are mentioned below.

Kapu seem to be the earliest inhabitants of the Deccan region who migrated from the North and cleared Forests for Agriculture and built Towns in the Deccan. They are considered to be the Original Aryan Descendants who migrated to South India.

Kapu Community is believed to be the descendants of migrants of the Kaampu tribe from Kampilya (near Ayodhya) and was one of the earliest inhabitants of South India who took to clearing the forests and starting agriculture in the Deccan and of the current day Andhra Pradesh.

Kapu Community is also referred to as the Kaampu tribe in the Ancient Texts, which was also, referred to as the Kossar tribe, who some historians believe established, the Satavahanas and other ancient dynasties.

Kapu Community shares a similar history to the Kurmi, kunbis and Maratha castes.

Brief Notes:
Some of the very common Gothrams found in the Kapu community are Janakula, Mahipala, Paidipaala, Raghukula, Kasyapa, Dhanunjaya, Athreya, Achyuta to name a few and there are lots of other Gothrams
• Naidu in Andhra refers to the Kapu/Telaga/Balija/Ontari/Turpu Kapu community.
• Balijas have the title Naidu and Setty
•. In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka they are called Balija Naidu
•. In Southern T.N. Districts Balijas have the title Naicker
• Munnuru Kapu's have the title Rao and Reddy in Telangana
• Kapu/ Telaga /Balija /Munnuru Kapu communities have the title Setty in their Surnames who served as Traders during the Kakateeya and Vijayanagar Empires.
(Indicating their Ancestors established Powerful Trading Guilds Surnames like Bandreddy, Ramisetty, Polisetty, Kalisetty, Muthamsetty, Kamisetty, Tirumalasetty, Rangisetty, Singamasetty, Chennamsetty etc)
• Telaga/Kapu Community also has the title Reddy in their Surnames in Coastal Andhra region.
(Indicating some of their ancestors were village heads. Maddireddy, Muthareddy, Kunapareddy, Katreddy, kasireddy, Rayapureddy, Siddireddy, Dharapureddy, Peddireddy etc.)
• Some Kapu/Telaga Surnames end with the title Neni which is a derivation of Senani. (Indicating the Ancestors of these families served as Commanders under the Kakateeya Dynasty.
Samineni, Lakkineni, Padalaneni, Vallabhaneni, chitikineni, kasineni etc.)
• Kapu and Telaga community have the title Rayudu in Coastal and Rayalaseema Regions which is a legacy of the communities association with the Vijayanagar Empire.
• Chola-Chalukyas used titles Udayar or Odeyar for certain period of time.

Occupation:
Kapu Community Primarily served as Protectors of villages from Bandits in the medieval ages who later took to other Professions like Village heads and Farmers during times of peace. During times of war they also served as Soldiers, Governors (Nayaks), Commanders in many of the Andhra Dynasties. Hence the term Nayaka/Naidu becomes synonymous with the community
Modern day Kapu Community is predominantly are an Agrarian community diversified into Business, Industry, Films, Academia, and IT etc.
Note:
Kapu in teh Pre Kakatiyan period referred to soldiers and agriculturists.
Some of the occupations or responsibilities that "Kapus" had in the medieval period:
•.Village defense committees (Kapu)
•.Administration (Pedda Kapu)
• People responsible for protecting the farms bandits and those protecting livestock were (Panta Kapu).
The term Kapu has become synonymous with Agriculturists.
Hence Reddy are called Kapu in Telangana & Rayalaseema of Andhra Pradesh.Genetics of the Communities of A.P.

Sub Castes:
There are many sub castes within the Kapu community but most of them prefer to be simply called Kapu.
• Kapu • Telaga • Balija/Balija Naidu • Munnuru Kapu • Ontari • Turpu kapu • Naidu

Kapu
The Kapu community is primarily concentrated in the Coastal Districts of Andhra. It is probably the oldest middle caste in Andhra along with the Yadava/Golla Community of A.P. and forms the bed rock of the state. They carry Caste title Naidu which is a Derivation of the word Nayaka. The Nayaka/Danda Nayaka could be found being under the Vishnukundini Dynasty of Andhra who ruled from the Krishna and Godavari Deltas during the 3rd Century A.D.
Kapu as a term is used to refer to Landowning or Agrarian Communities in Andhra Pradesh. Today the Land Owners are called Kapu by the Agricultural Laborers, and those who served as village heads were given the title of Reddy. This is the reason the title Reddy is found among the Kapu and Reddy castes. They are heavily concentrated in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh.
Kapu Branches:
. Dhulipudi • Mekala (Also found in Kamma, Boya, Chencus)
• Mogili (Also found in Yerukulas)
• Motati • Mungaru • Tungala • Thorati • Nagali • Nerati or Neravati
(Also found in Reddy)
• Pakanati or Pakinadu (Eastern territory)
(Also found in Reddy, Golla, Kamsala, Mala, and Tskala)
• Oruganti (Also found in Mudiraju)
• Nagaralu / Patrulu • Chalukya Kapu • Challa • Uggina •. Paggina • Koraganji

Note:
Konda Kapu, Vanne Kapu, Are Kapu, Kapu Savara, Moras Kapu & Reddy Subcastes like (Dommari Kapu, Godugulanati Kapu, Kodithi Kapu, Musugu kapu, Nallevelama Kapu, Pakaanati Kapu, Paala Kapu, Palle kapu, Panta Kapu, pedakanti kapu, Pokanati Kapu, Sajjana kapu, Velama Kapu, Yerlam kapu) are not Part of the Kapu Caste.

Telaga
The Origin of the Telaga’s can be traced back to the Western Chalukyan Expansion into Andhra region which happened in the 6th century A.D. Telagas are the most, ancient Warrior/Agricultural clans of the Deccan and South India who are specialized in warfare. They ruled over the Palnadu, Velnadu and Renadu regions to Andhra Pradesh as Feudatories and Principal Clans of these regions.
Some of the major and improtant Dynasities of Telagas are
• Telugu Cholas
•. Kona Kings
• Koppula Chiefs
•. Musunuri Nayaks
• Korukonda Nayaks

The Term Telaga was a derivation of the word Telingana. Andhra was referred to as Telingana in the ancient text as it was the area that had three major Shivinsa-Aramas, thus was called Tri-Ling, and the people living there were called Telugus and the language spoken by the people there was called Telugu. The Telagas have served as Nayakulu (Governors), Commanders and vassals of the Western Chalukya rulers under Pulakesin, These Commanders were also called Telugu Nayakulu from which the community name might also have been derived Telaga.
They formed the bulwark of Ancient armies of the Deccan and South India like Cholas, Pallavas, Chalukyas and Kaktiya etc. They seem to have a connection with the Eastern Chalukyas. The Vassals of Chalukyas entered into Matrimonial Alliances and ultimately established the Chalukya - Chola Dynasty. The Telugu Cholas are in fact the Telagas. They seem to have a connection with the Eastern Chalukyas. Also the Telugu Cholas (Velanti Cholulu) of Palnadu War who supported Bramha Naidu in his war against the Nalagam Raju. So were the other Telugu Chola Dynasties like Renati Cholas, Konidena Choals, Nannuru Cholas, and Nellore Chola Kings.

Balija:
Balijas are concentrated throughout Andhra and Rayalseema Region, Tamilnadu and Karnataka. This is the only Sub caste of Kapu which bears both the tiles Setty and Naidu.
Balija is Primarily a Warrior / Trading community by occupation they seem to have been formed by a small Social Change that seem to have occurred among some sections of the Kapu community the Original Balijas seem to have migrated form the Balijipeta, Srikakulam District .According to some Historians. Veera balingyas were mentioned in Kakatiya inscriptions. They were powerful and wealthy merchants who were highly respected in Kakatiyan society. The Balijas had the title Setty and were primarily Tax collectors and Merchants.

The following are the major Balija ruling clans or Dynasties which comprised the heart of Vijayanagar Empire. It is also said the great Emperor Krishnadevaraya had a Balija / Kapu Origin.
• Araveeti Dynasty the last Dynasty of Vijayanagar and its ruler Ramaraya the last ruler of the Vijayanagar Empire was Kota Balija.
• Madurai nayaks
• Tanjavur nayaks
• Ceylon Khandi Kings
• Penukonda
• Kalyanadurg
• Rayadurgam
• Chandragiri
• Udayagiri
Kasturi Naidu, Peda Koenti Nayudu of the Vasarasi family of Balija caste ruled these provinces.
Most of the Balijas refer themselves as kapu/Telaga in Andhra and as Munnuru Kapu in Telangana. But in Rayalaseema Area they are not referred as Kapu but as Balija/Setty Balija / Balija Naidi / Naidu here kapu refers to Reddys another Community, however they retain the caste title Naidu.
Balija Branches:
Setty Balija, These were the Rich and Powerful Traders and Merchants of the Kakatiya Dynasty, there was mention of some very old Trading Guilds concentrated in Bellary in Karnataka. In fact Historian's suggest this was the first branch in Balijas.
• Balija Naidu is a derivation of the term Balija Nayakulu. This sub caste seems to have formed during the Kakatiya Dynasty times primarily to protect the Balija / Setty trading caravans from being attacked by bandits. The current Anantapur Dt. and Nellore Dt were ruled by Balija Naidu Kings' Families.
• Kota Balijas the Araveedu dynasty of Vijayanagar Empire was from this lineage so are the Madurai nayaks and the Tanjavore nayaks.
• Gajula Balija / Sugavansi Balija (Pure) Myth is that Siva's wile Parvati made a penance in order to look beautiful for Siva and person that brought her bangles riding a donkey was the ancestor of the Gajula Balija.
• Kavarai (Kavara Balija Naidu or Gavara Balija Naidu). "Kavarai is the name for Balijas (Teluu trading caste), who have settled in the Tamil country" as per Thurston of Castes and Tribes of Southern India.
Kavarais call themselves Balija (Born from lire). They use the titles Naidu, Nayakkan. Chetti or Setti and nayak. Gajula Balija is the largest sub-division of Kavarais. The equivalent name of Gajula Balija in Tamil is Valaiyal Chetti, (The meaning of Tamil name valaiyal in Telugu is Gajula (Bangles)). Gajula Balijas attained this name as they were involved in manufacturing and selling bangles initially though they made their mark in various other fields later.
• Rajamahendravaram Balija or Musu kamma Balija (Named after a special ear ornament worn by women)
• Gandavall or Gundapodi Vandlu (Supposed to have originally Komatis)
. Odda (vada) Balija a subcaste of the Balija based in Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and. East Godavari Dist, a community of Sea-faring Traders and Merchants.

Munnuru Kapu:
Munnuru Kapu's are primarily concentrated in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. By Occupation they are Farmers. The name Munnuru seems to be of a recent origin, which means three hundred. They were a part of the Telaga community and were the Imperial guard of the Tanjavore Nayaks. The Nawabs of Hyderabad requested the Tanjavore nayaks to send a battalion of his best infantry and cavalry for this personal security. The Tanjavore Nayak dispatched three hundred Telaga men and their families. The descendants of these three hundred families are now called Munnuru Kapu.
The Munnuru Kapu's have always been associated with one Kingdom or the other in the form of Interior palace Guards like Tanjavore nayaks, Devarakonda, and Nizam etc.
Ontari:
Ontari community is concerted mainly in Coastal Andhra. They have the title Naidu and Dora. Ontari Kapu's used to be soldiers/Special Forces in Andhra Kingdoms. They are different from the Ontaris. The Ontari-Kapu community was primarily specialized in individual weapons like a sword or a spear and was primarily used for special operations. Their surnames always start with weapons like Kattula (Knife), Tupakula(Pistol),
Kommula etc,.
Note:
Ontari of Mudiraj Community is not part of the Kapu-Ontari Caste.

Turpu Kapu:
Turpu in Telugu means east. The Kapus living on the eastern frontiers of Andhra Pradesh called themselves Turpu Kapus. There have been some rulers of coastal kingdoms from this community; they are hard working poor and middle farmers. They are majority community especially in Vizianagaram District by many of them still show their feudal loyalty to erstwhile Zamindars of Bobbili and Vizianagaram etc. Off late however the political awakening of this Caste has led some representatives of this caste group to be politically active.

Naidu:
Nayaka—> Nayudu—> Naidu—> Naicker—> Naidoo
Native captain or Headman.
Title of honor among Hindus in the Deccan. ”The King of Deccan also has a custom when they will honor a man or recompense their service done, and raise him to dignity and honor. They give him the title of Nayak.
It evolved in the following manner during different phases of history.
Many people with the Naidu surname had some remote ancestor who was a solider that was promote to 'Nayaka". It is equivalent to a Baron. They served as nayaks under the Chalukyas, Kakatiyas and Vijayanagar Emperors. The Kakatiya Dynasty had many prominent Nayaks, of which several were from kapu background. The Vijayanagar kings also had several Nayakas of Kapu, Telaga and Balija background.
Naidu’s, especially of Kapu background, have migrated to several countries like United Kingdom (UK), South Africa, Mauritius, United States etc. They are active in the local Telugu and Tamil associations.

The anger of Kapus

The anger of Kapus seemed to have affected the electoral victory of YSRCP in many districts particularly in East and West Godavari, where the community is numerically strong.

"Kapus believe that the late chief minister, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, spoiled their dreams of taking over reins of power from two dominant communities when Chiranjeevi floated PRP. Now Pawan Kalyan undermined the YSRCP's chances of forming government," said political analyst Prof. LSN Prasad.

Although YSRCP president YS Jaganmohan Reddy attempted to win over Kapus by fielding candidates from the community even in places where other social groups are strong, Kapus did not favour YSRCP nominees in many places. The party fielded Kapu candidates in six Lok Sabha constituencies, the highest by any party this general election.

However, all six candidates lost despite having considerable number of Kapu votes in their constituencies. Surprisingly, Kapu candidates lost even in their strongholds though the rivals were from relatively less dominant social group. The YSRCP failed to win even a single Assembly segment out of 15 in West Godavari and was confined to just five of the 19 in East Godavari.

This eventually reduced the YSRCP's tally to just five out of 34 segments, while the TDP bagged the other 29. Worse, the YSRCP won five of the 16 segments in Krishna and another five of the 17 in Guntur giving it just 10 of the 33 seats. In all, YSRCP won just 15 of the 67 seats in four districts.

"YSRCP would have easily formed government even if it won half the Kapu dominated segments in Godavari, Krishna and Guntur districts," said Kapunadu leader PV Prasad. But Kapus successfully ensured Jagan's defeat, he said.

Although former minister Thota Narasimham joined the TDP just before elections, he trounced a relatively stronger Ch Suneel of YSRCP just due to the overwhelming support he received from Kapus. The most surprising result was the shocking defeat of Thota Chandrasekhar in Eluru Lok Sabha where Kapus consist of almost 3.5 lakh voters.

While TDP candidates in Kamma strongholds of Vijayawada and Guntur won the seats with comfortable majorities of around 70,000 votes, Maganti Babu won Eluru, a Kapu dominated constituency with over one lakh votes.

BJP to use Pawan Kalyan as trump card in AP!

Pawan Kalyan had got invitation for BJP’s Parliamentary Board meeting. NDA allies will be electing Modi as their Prime Minister candidate in the same meeting. But Jana Sena President has got special invitation for the meeting even though he did not have any MPs. Experts say that BJP and particularly Modi is very impressed with his efforts in the recently concluded elections and wants to use him effectively in the future.
They are thinking on the lines that Pawan Kalyan will be a good source for them to expand their sway in to both the Telugu speaking states. Modi wants Pawan Kalyan in BJP leading the party in either region or he at least wants Jana Sena to be a faithful partner for BJP in all the elections going forward. On the other side, Chandra Babu will not be too worried about Pawan Kalyan going close to Modi as it will keep Jagan at bay from the incoming Prime Minister. Looks like interesting things are lined up for Pawan Kalyan’s political future.

Kapus into BC

TDP senior leader Dhulipalla Narendra informed the AP assembly that special package to backward classes (BC) is one of the priorities of Telugu Desam government. He responding to Governor’s address assured that his government would ensure smooth entry of Kapus into BC’s list without affecting other reservations.
He was updating the house about requests from their government not to pressurise farmers for recovery of loans and said they are waiting for Kotaiah Committee for deciding on the farmers loan waiver scheme. He felt happy that NTR Sujala Sravanthi would be benefitting common man with mineral water like quality water of 40 litres for each family. He said that this scheme would be a boon to the poor families and water-scarce population of AP.

Devi Sri Prasad as D.S.P

Devi Sri Prasad was born in Vedurupaka, East Godavari District .His family later moved to Chennai where he completed his schooling and BBA graduation. Music fascinated him since an early age and he won several prizes in light music and dance competitions in his childhood. At school, he used to learn Kabir Dos and other such stuff and compose his own tune for them. His father G.Satya Murthy is an accomplished script writer and his grandmother Devi Meenakshi is a classical musician.

He started off by composing tunes for college functions. He gave music to '50-50', a serial on Gemini T.V and lent his voice to its title song. He got the big break whenMagnasound featured his song ‘Ey Unnoda’ in the their collection of Tamil pop songs called ‘Dance Party’. This song, along with the video, catapulted his music career into a new dimension. Later on, the company asked him to do his own album, and it was eventually released as 'Mr.Devi'.

Producer M.S.Raju was impressed with his talent and asked him to compose for his mythological movie 'Devi'. DSP, the 17-year-old debutant surprised everyone with his songs and meticulous Re-recording involving vedic chants and choral hymns. Both soundtrack and background score were highly appreciated with the song "Nee Navve" still being very popular. He then composed a single song "Konte Baapu" for popular Telugu director Srinu Vaitla's directorial debut venture Nee kosam. His next venture was 'Navvuthu Bratakalira' and the songs "Dhinana Thom Thakita" and "Konaseema Kurradanni Ro" became popular and earned him more opportunities.
His big breakthrough came with Anadam in 2001 and the album went on to become a colossal hit and changed his life as a composer. Songs like "Kanulu Therichina" and "Evaraina Epudaina" had a huge impact and DSP's career took an upswing from here. The peppy "Udayinchina" from Kalusukovalani.is still popular and is performed in many dance shows.Krishna Vamsi patriotic film Kadgam followed and became a big hit musically due to "Nuvvu Nuvvu", "Govinda" and "Aha Allari".

His first major venture Mamnmadudu, starring Tollywood biggie Nagarjuna. The songs were appreciated for their freshness and melody. Even his background score for the film was highly appreciated.
Varsham earned him stardom as a composer with all songs becoming huge hits. The songs "Nuvvostanante" and "Mellaga" are still popular among the youth. The album is another landmark in DSP's career after 'Anandam' and he was soon flooded with offers. It fetched him his 1st Filmfare Best Telugu Music Director Award. Venky was extremely popular, thanks to dance numbers like "Silakemo" and "Gongura Thotakada".

He composed music for Sukumar's debut directon Movie Aarya . The whole album became hugely popular, especially among the youth. He then composed music for Megastar's Sankar dada MBBSand Nagarjuna starrer Mass. They became huge hits and catapulted DSP to the top league of music directors. These albums also cemented his place in the industry and he proved his versatility in composing mass as well as melodious songs Nuvvuostanante Nenoddantana and Bunny fared really well among his next few albums. "Kanmoodi" and "Vaadi Vaadi" from 'Sachien' were instant hits and DSP's success streak extended to Tamil Industry too.

He started off 2006 by composing Prabhu Devas periodic drama Pournami. The album was well received, but it was overshadowed by the tremendous musical success of Bommarillu. Consequently Devi Sri Prasad won his second Filmfare Best Music Director Award for his highly acclaimed work in 'Bommarillu'. After Jagadam and shankar dada Zindabad, he got special recognition for composing item Numbers.
The music of Power Star Pavan Kalyan starrer Jalsa became a stupendous success and fetched him his third Film fare Best Telugu Music Director Award.

Kamal Haasan chose Devi Sri Prasad for the background score of his magnum opus Dasavatharam his dream of working with the legendary actor came true. His ability to compose, sing, write and set the stage afire during live shows made Kamal Haasan call him 'The Showman."Ringa Ringa" from AARYA-2 was a chartbuster and received nation wide recognition. Niharika Konidela

The tall Niharika is already a head turner at 19. In the second year of Mass Communication in St Mary’s, she is aiming to be a producer. Apparently, that is what her father actor Naga Babu wants her to be. Soft spoken and down to earth, the young woman had already acted in a short film that is floating on the You Tube but why is she averse to acting? “I’m not, I will not reject it if I got an opportunity but I’m not thinking about it now. I want to do a course in film making first and I love management. Even while dad is discussing with his unit, I sit in a corner and listen to the plan and their talk of implementation.” But did her father get to see the film? “No, I was out of town and by the time I returned my great grand mom died. It all happened suddenly, they were looking for an actor and they couldn’t find one and I stepped in. It is about how I fall out of love and the guy and this guy unlike other love failures is not scared to fall in love again.

Mahanati Savitri

Colour beneath the black & white

First Published : 28 Jun 2009 03:41:00 PM IST

The central character was a great artiste; so you expect the book also to be extraordinary. For that to happen, and in this case about the late film heroine Savitri, the biographers need to be detached - at least during the time of writing. But V R Murthy and V Soma Raju are such ardent fans of the yesteryear actor-director-producer that this basic norm is violated. Result: a hagiography, and an often meandering one at that.
The brothers, in fact, come up with what’s a complete one-stop search about the Telugu-origin actress who died in 1981, aged 44. Thus, A Legendary Actress: Mahanati Savitri is a copious collection of information where, for instance, you’ll even find a three-page medical journal’s explanation on alcoholism - in those pages dwelling on the actress’ years of liquor dependency. For an artiste whose life was nothing short of dramatic, this 640-page book strings up several incidents to feed the maw of a curious reader.Romantically linked to a much-married Gemini Ganesan when she was barely in her teens, Savitri had a roller coaster of a relationship with him, which would end 13 years later leaving a bitter taste in her.
If detailing is the book’s biggest advantage, it’s the chief shortcoming too. Deep focus is fine when it’s about her career front, but it does seem unasked for, say, in sections relating to the Tenali-born actress’ early life and the lives of her kin.Adulation fuels the authors to write, but then they don’t know when to stop. Savitri’s years of courtship with actor Gemini, her secret marriage to him when she was barely 16 years, and her twilight years spent in desolation find detailed explanation, with many sub plots and incidents too. All these lend the book, a UH Publication, an epic-like quality. And thankfully, the writers do offer the pleasures of perspective with first-hand accounts of many actors and fans and their encounters with the actress, apart from a translation of Savitri’s diaries.
Savitri’s decision to run from home and marry her co-star Gemini in the Chamundi Temple in 1952, fearing her uncle-mentor K V Choudary’s opposition to it, and an ugly spat with him when he learns of her marriage keep the spice quotient alive. Media reports of the actress landing up at Gemini Ganesan’s house one night after her fallout with uncle Choudary have been clarified to be true, withchat transcripts with the late actor Gemini Ganesan himself. An incident that shocked the film fraternity was Savitri’s announcement of her marriage to Gemini four years after it happened. This is mentioned in good detail. Now, that makes for a delightful read, given the very little press and resources about it.
In fact, translations of Savitri’s personal diaries by the biographers help empathise with her. The actress announced her wedding only by signing on a product advertisement as Savitri Ganesh, taking the media and her fans by storm. Also provided is a copy of the 1956 Lux ad where a young Savitri smiles sagely. Her love for Gemini’s first wife Alamelu, and her regret over her marriage to him, which later led to her alcohol addiction, are other seldom written about aspects that get mentioned here.
By going beyond her active acting span to write about her in her waning years, the bid is to bring out Savitri more as a person than as an actor in 318 films - in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi too. The firsthand account of a scribe speaks of a businessman (her big fan) who’d  send Savitri a money order for Rs 100 everyday. And the actor selling all her awards to help him start a new business is but one example of the effort by the biographers to make a comprehensive collection of her life. Her last few years, spent in utter isolation, with very little money and poor health, reminisced by many contemporary filmmakers and journalists who met her, is also a revelation. Overall, Savitri’s sense of balance, quality of work and efficiency in whatever she did are apparent. Yet, the work comes across as wanting in these very aspects.
