Andhra Pradesh gets AIIMS, IIT and what else in Union Budget?

Students can rejoice as Andhra Pradesh has been allocated three prestigious national level institutes -- an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and an Agriculture University -- in the Union Budget presented on Thursday.

These three premiere institutes are part of the 11 promised to residuary Andhra Pradesh in the AP Reorganisations Act.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen on starting national-level institutes like IIT from the current academic year from a temporary campus.

However, experts are against the establishment of premiere institutes like IITs from a temporary campus with insufficient infrastructre mainly laboratories, as it would lower the "brand image" of institutes like IITs and IIMs.

Earlier, Chandrababu Naidu finalised the location of 11 national-level institutes to be set up in the state in accordance with the AP Reorganisation Act. All three regions of the state — south Andhra, north Andhra and Rayalaseema —  have been included.

District collectors have already set the process in motion to identify these land intensive institutes because each requires a minimum of 300 acres.

The proposed 11 premier institutes in all three regions (circuits) of AP are as follows: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), national Institute of Information Technology (NIT), national institute of Disaster management (NIDM), Indan Institute of Management (IIM), International Institute of Information Technology, Petroleum and Tribal Universities, Indian Institute of technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) and Central University (CU).

The locations are:

Krishna-Guntur circuit
AIIMS, AU, NIT and NIDM

Visakhapatnam circuit:
IIM, IIIT, Petroleum & Tribal Universities

Tirupati circuit:
IIT, IISER & Central University

What else for Andhra?
* Vizag-Chennai industrial corridor to get a boost.
* Hardware park in Kakinada to come up. There will also be special focus on Kakinada port.
* There will come up a national excise and customs academy in Hindupur.
* A smart city at Krishnapatnam.
